UPS and DHL Partner for Air Shipments, DHL to Cut 6,100 Jobs

May 31, 2008 – 12:53 pm

The financial woes at DHL are continuing as the company announces plans to restructure and simultaneously announces the first phases of that restructuring. The night sort operation at DHL’s Wilmington, OH hub will be eliminated - which is expected to cost 6,100 jobs including the jobs lost at various companies DHL wholly or partly owns at the complex. DHL is outsourcing those operations to UPS in what is currently being called a ‘partnership’ by DHL but that could be the beginning of a sellout to UPS.

Clearly, this means good things for UPS’s sagging profits, as their stock is climbing.

  2. I am pretty much sure that DHL has handed UPS their share of the market in the US. How are the sales people to sell a DHL product when everyone knows it is carried on UPS? Why would a business client include DHL in their shipping diversification when the packages are on UPS? The biggest question I have is what is going to happen with the largest privately owned airport in the world? Two runways capable of handling 747-400s AN-124s etc, and NAVAID equipment allowing CAT III landings. There has not been a major airport built in the US since Denver. That airport in Wilmington would be ideal for an industrial park, or an addition to current cargo carriers, or some that are considering offering flight services. DHL is done. Time to move on.
