If you were planning to ship something, you should have done it yesterday. UPS is increasing rates by 4.9 percent in 2008 for ground shipments and by 6.9 percent for air express and international shipments. The company raised its rates by about this amount last year as well.

Fedex Corp said on Friday that the Internal Revenue Service found that its FedEx Ground independent contractors should be reclassified as employees for tax purposes and that the company faced related taxes and penalties of more than $319 million for 2002.
